Lots of people make geneology a hobby. Some have long-lived family members who can tell stories of familial ancestors and to some extent fill in gaps where documentation is scant.
Our family isn’t much like that. I think we accept life for what it is and live the best we can in the here and now—sometimes that’s really all any of us can do.
But to satisfy a passing curiosity I looked up what my last name meant (and to see what history I could find in it), as well as what my first name meant. The results were intriguing.
Nicklaus apparently means “Victory of the people.” While I’m not sure how many other names share this meaning I choose to embrace as a moniker of wholly American virtue, at least in the context of our nation’s birth.
My first name apparently means “God’s peace.” No pressure there, right?
If you’d like to know more about me (moreso than simply my name) then pay a visit to my spiffed up website avomnia.com. The About Me page is new and different from the ‘about me’ on this blog.
What does your name mean?

Galligar is a derivitive of the clan, Ó Gallchobhair, which claims to be the most senior family of the the dynasty of the Cenél Conaill in Ireland. The name meaning is “helper of strangers,” which has been determined that the clan was friendly with the allys who came to their shores.
The clan hails from the barony of Tirhugh (“land of Hugh”) near Ballyshannon, County Donegal, Ireland.
Sharon means “princess,” in Hebrew. Need I say more!
My name means faithful to Christ. Not sure that it fits so well…
There is a town in Denmark that has a name the same as my last; so I think It just means my family came from that town. The meaning is something like “a clearing in the woods, or clearing by the cliff.”
I went and took a look at avomnia.com. I like the changes, the colors and arrangement of the site are very inviting.
What really drew me in though and made my heart soar, my mind reel is your writing. “I am awed by the indignities and atrocities which love can (and has) overcome. It can do much, if we will only be receptive. Her melody is gentle and beautiful as a pristine night sky, and as warmly beckoning as the moonglow that alights upon the window pane. She is strong yet still needs protecting. She stumbles, and takes us with her. She triumphs and we soar. She is eternal.”
For me that brings the image of every love, for good or bad, that I have felt. The fleeting excitement, the growing companionship, and the retched endings, but all still making me feel so alive.
I am so glad that there is someone in this world that can compose such beauty into words.
Kristi
I should have been named Sharon. I’ve been trying to live as a Sharon and thanks to Sharon Chance, I now figured it out…I was misnamed.
Frances : Free Woman ( German)
Hideko: Child of graciousness (Japanese)
Kakugawa : Square River or Cornered River ( Japanese)
I’ll be glad to share with you, Frances!
I think your names are very lovely though!
Thank you, Sharon, I’m going to try living like a Princess hereafter…better than a woman caught in a square river.
Isn’t there a name that means “Emperor’s daughter”?
Yes there is, Frances Kakugawa.
When I taught grade school, the lst day’s assignment was to write a bit about themselves, their likes and dislikes in school, what should I watch for to see that they’re happy in my class and how did they get their name?
Many didn’t know so had to ask their parents over dinner. Brie, a sweet girl could hardly wait to tell me the next morning, “Do you know they named me after a cheese? And I hate cheese.”
The Emperor’s Daughter.
Michel- ‘Who is like God’ . Talk about pressure
Ren’e- ‘Reborn’. Does that mean I’ve been here before?
