I would be willing to bet that most people who may read this post will remember using a typewriter, and if they haven’t actually used one will have seen (or at least touched) one. For those who think typewriters are a piece of our nostalgic past, like the Edsel or pet rock, have a look at the clip below. That clickety-clack gave rise to carbon copy paper (what did you think “CC:” meant?) and tiny bottles of white liquid called Liquid Paper.

Thanks Lairbooo, I thought so too. Sadly, those who have never used a typewriter won’t understand just how much timing was necessary to make the end-of-line chime ring, and then return the platen to the opposite side. Just a fun little piece!
I love this piece! I heard it ages ago, when I was a really little kid, and it’s charmed me ever since. It makes me a bit weepy, but it’s true that it could only have been created during this era that ended up being very short, really, when typewriters were so relevant and essential and such a huge deal. I wish they still were, because they’re so charming in the sort of middle ground they have between mechanical and human effort.
